I’ve spent over two decades in high-performance environments as an athlete, coach, and businessperson. During this time, I’ve had the privilege of being mentored by and working with numerous champions in the business world. As an athlete, I’ve had experiences playing alongside and against elite international competitors. As a coach, I’ve worked with some of Ireland’s most prestigious young talents, seasoned internationals, and professional athletes.

My fascination in the mental aspects of performance was sparked by my own clear need for improvement in this field. In my early teens, as a nationally ranked tennis player, my approach to the mental game was what held me back from reaching my top potential. Shifting my focus to hockey in my late teens, I discovered, a decade later, that the same mental processes that affected my tennis were still present.

This started what is now a nearly 20-year study of the nuances of human behaviour. Delving into psychology, physiology, neurology, axiology and sociology has provided me with a comprehensive view of what drives us to act, think, and perform. What I have found is that there is a scientific approach to optimising our mental performance.

Our grasp of the principles that dictate mental processes has made incredible strides in the last decade. The Ground-breaking work on the existence of anti-memory by Oxford University and University College London is but one example of the leaps in neuropsychology which are fundamentally redefining the psychological paradigm. When you understand the principles that govern the mind, enormous transformation is achievable. The process at times may not be easy but it will be simple. Mastery is not necessary but it is an option. As the “Pareto Principle” states 80% of results or outcomes can come from just 20% of the effort.

In conclusion, a methodical and processed approach to the enhancement of mental performance is now achievable with a precision paralleling that of physical conditioning of the body.
